In Afternoon Sky, the artist captures the quiet stillness and luminous breadth of a sky suspended in the gentle light of the afternoon. Rather than rendering a literal scene, Murakami evokes the passage of time and the emotional resonance contained within a fleeting moment. The sky—here a simple yet profound motif—serves as a conduit for reflection, encouraging viewers to experience the boundary between perception and feeling.
This early work demonstrates the artist’s developing inquiry into space and light, laying the foundation for later pieces such as Ten, Blue Fuji, and Tiantan, in which expansive skies and atmospheric fields play central roles.

村上裕二氏はこれまで、滝や風景といった自然、地中海や中国の建造物、さらにはウルトラマンやゴジラ、仮面ライダーといった現代の象徴的存在まで、多様な題材を描いてきた。一見ばらばらに見えるそれらは、いずれも「人が何に畏れ、何に祈り、何に意味を見出してきたか」という問いへとつながっている。
Yuji Murakami has explored a wide range of subjects throughout his career, including natural motifs such as waterfalls, architectural landscapes of the Mediterranean and China, as well as iconic figures from Japanese popular culture such as Ultraman, Godzilla, and Kamen Rider. Though diverse in appearance, these subjects are connected by a consistent inquiry into what humans fear, revere, and transform into objects of belief.
