本作は、日本の特撮文化を代表するウルトラマンシリーズに登場する「科学特捜本部」の世界観を手がかりに、都市と人間の精神風景を描いた作品である。科学特捜本部は、未知の存在に対峙する理性と希望の象徴であり、本作においては具体的な物語や人物としてではなく、都市に内在する秩序や緊張感として表現されている。村上は、線や色彩を重ねることで、現代都市が抱える理性と不安、分析と直感の交錯を可視化する。日本画という伝統的な技法を用いながら、特撮という現代神話を精神性の次元へと昇華させた一作である。

Inspired by the Ultraman series, this work draws upon the fictional world of the Scientific Investigation Headquarters, an organization emblematic of reason, hope, and humanity’s response to the unknown. Rather than illustrating a specific scene or character, Murakami abstracts this iconic setting into a psychological and urban landscape. Layers of line and color suggest the underlying order, tension, and anxiety embedded within the modern city. By employing the materials and sensibility of Japanese painting, the artist transforms a symbol of popular culture into a contemporary mythology, exploring the intersection of rationality and intuition in the human-made environment.
村上裕二氏はこれまで、滝や風景といった自然、地中海や中国の建造物、さらにはウルトラマンやゴジラ、仮面ライダーといった現代の象徴的存在まで、多様な題材を描いてきた。一見ばらばらに見えるそれらは、いずれも「人が何に畏れ、何に祈り、何に意味を見出してきたか」という問いへとつながっている。
Yuji Murakami has explored a wide range of subjects throughout his career, including natural motifs such as waterfalls, architectural landscapes of the Mediterranean and China, as well as iconic figures from Japanese popular culture such as Ultraman, Godzilla, and Kamen Rider. Though diverse in appearance, these subjects are connected by a consistent inquiry into what humans fear, revere, and transform into objects of belief.
